Weddings and funerals

Weddings

Congratulations on your upcoming union! Every queer wedding is a testament to love, resilience, and possibility, and we’re honored that you’ve considered QMOB during this meaningful time. We also recognize that weddings can bring up complex emotions for many in our community, and that having support can make a real difference.

Below is an overview of what QMOB is currently able to offer, based on our organizational capacity.

Nikkah & Venue

QMOB is able to provide a Nikkah ceremony as part of our community offerings, free of charge. While QMOB does not have elected imams, we are supported by several trusted community organizers who can work with you to thoughtfully craft and deliver your Nikkah prayers and khutbah.

We can also offer use of our regular meeting space at Union Church in Boston, MA, provided we receive at least 45 days’ notice.

Items such as catering and the official Nikkah paperwork must be provided by the wedding party. If the wedding party is experiencing financial hardship, please note this in your initial email. We are happy to explore what may be possible within QMOB’s available funds. As our funding fluctuates, advance notice is essential to assess feasibility.

Cultural Ceremonies

For many in our community, cultural ceremonies, before and sometimes after the Nikkah, are among the most meaningful parts of a wedding. Events such as Mehendis are labor-intensive and require significant advance planning.

Given our current capacity, we ask that wedding parties come prepared with a budget to help compensate for the labor, time, and materials involved. After an initial conversation to understand your needs and timeline, QMOB will prepare a quote. From there, the wedding party can decide which elements they would like to move forward with.

QMOB can only offer our regular meeting space at Union Church for these events. Any additional venue needs must be arranged by the wedding party.

Funerals

We recognize that the passing of a loved one can be a deeply painful, and at times isolating, experience for queer Muslim community members. Many of us may be physically or emotionally separated from our families during times of grief.

QMOB is able to offer janaza prayers and duas during our QMOSQUE Jummah services. If you would like prayers offered for someone who has passed, please email us with the name of the deceased so we can include them in our communal prayers.
