Our History

In 2011, Kaamila Mohamed, Nabil Khan, and Thouheen Alam met at the LGBT Muslim Retreat organized by MASGD (Muslim Alliance for Sexual & Gender Diversity). Together, they founded the Queer Muslims of Boston (QMOB) in February 2013. Twelve people joined for QMOB's first monthly meeting that March. Over the next year and a half, the community held monthly gatherings of around ten people, covering topics like religious identity, shame and pride, patience, political struggle, Ramadan and Eid reflections, and mental health. In 2023, QMOB celebrated its 10th anniversary at its annual iftar with over 80 attendees.

In October 2024, QMOB launched its next major initiative, QMOSQUE, in collaboration with Boston's Union Church. Founded by a group of new and old QMOB members, QMOSQUE serves as a physical gathering space for queer and trans Muslim life in Boston and beyond. QMOSQUE offers Jummah services, weddings, funeral prayers, shahada support, and much more. With over ten years of organizing in New England, we strive to provide our community with the religious, spiritual, social, and material support that is needed today.
